Subaru is one of the most well-known Japanese automakers. It’s most well-known for creating the brilliant Impreza and Legacy, as well as its successful exploits in rallying with both those models. The Impreza has retained a strong following thanks to its WRX and STi variants, and several versions of the Legacy are revered by JDM enthusiasts.
Subaru wasn’t all about its rally cars and sporty sedans and wagons back in the ’90s, though. Early on in that decade, Subaru could sell you a car that wasn’t like anything else out there. It was a luxurious sports coupe that blended Japanese engineering with Italian design. It also had a unique engine and some of the most advanced technology you could get on a car from the early ’90s. Still, it wasn’t nearly as successful as Subaru had hoped, and one attempt to save it came too little too late.
