Headwaters is a club event, which are smaller in scale and typically focused on a regional level. These events allow local and amateur drivers to participate and gain experience in a competitive environment.
So, what is it like to compete in this event? This rally is a driver’s dream, reminiscent of Rally Finland in the World Rally Championship. Northern Minnesota is a sea of sand and sweeping roads, surrounded by breathtaking lakes and forests. The roads are roller coasters of a different kind, with numerous yumps and crests to unweight the car. They are not car breakers unless you screw up.
This is an event where drivers gain speed and learn commitment. Commitment in this sense is in reference to the velocity that one is carrying through corners and trust in your pacenotes and codriver. There is no real place to practice or learn this skill except in competition, and it can be scary. Especially the high-speed stuff, which is what comes last to a driver, and in this situation, you are entering a corner with a degree of uncertainty and trees close by on either side. I invite those that say “just put your foot down!” to come out and try it. It gets expensive fast if you misjudge it.
