Friday was the longest day of action at Southern Ohio Forest Rally. Reigning champion Brandon Semenuk made it feel short, winning every stage to lead his Subaru team-mate Travis Pastrana by one minute and 28.6 seconds. It wasn’t an entirely straightforward day for the reigning world champion. His WRX suffered a water temperature issue on stage four after ingesting too much grass from cutting corners, also shattering his windscreen in the process. Read More →

Southern Ohio Forest Rally’s signature stage is one of the shortest in the world of rallying. At 0.97 miles, the Yoctangee Park test could be misinterpreted as a Mickey Mouse itinerary filler, unbefitting of what follows. But the end of this stage is not child’s play. The final stretch leading up to the finish line features one of the biggest jumps in American rallying. It’s a chance to be a hero and capture the spotlight.… Read More →

It’s easy to get confused at this year’s Southern Ohio Forest Rally. Usually, there’s only one 199 car – the blue and yellow Subaru WRX piloted by Travis Pastrana. But in Ohio, there’s another 199 car. Except it’s actually 661. Only if it’s upside down does it become 199. Pastrana is going beyond the driver’s seat for the latest round of the American Rally Association National Championship by fielding a team that’s running a 24-year-old… Read More →

On Tuesday, May 28, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda announced a lineup of innovative new combustion engines that can be used either in a stand-alone or hybrid form in conjunction with a battery. The new engines will be combustion engines but also compatible with alternative fuels such as e-fuel (synthetic fuel), biofuels, and liquid hydrogen. Liquid hydrogen, provided the hydrogen is made from electrolysis, emits zero carbon dioxide (CO2). And while both e-fuel and biofuels do… Read More →

When I handed the keys to our long-term 2023 Subaru WRX to Senior Editor John Snyder, it was after a long day of driving it back-to-back with a 2024 WRX TR. Fear not; that writeup is coming. But with my stint in the WRX ending, I couldn’t help but think about another sporty Japanese car of which I am particularly fond. Yeah, I’m going to make this about a Miata. Don’t worry; it’ll be quick. Read More →

Subaru expanded the WRX lineup for 2024 with the new manual-only TR model, which featured a series of upgrades including brakes, stiffer springs, retuned steering, and front Recaro bucket seats. Now Subaru is adding another special performance model with the 2025 WRX tS. That moniker stands for “tuned by STI,” and the latest WRX variant gains a new suspension tweaked by the STI performance division, along with a new digital gauge cluster. The headlining update… Read More →

Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru are all currently trailing the rest of the industry when it comes to EV models. However, the three Japanese automakers are united in plans to develop next-gen internal-combustion engines. That news follows Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru recently announcing during a “Multipathway Workshop” that they have agreed to collaborate on future powertrains, though each company will still focuses on their own engines. Ricardo Cordero has seen enough. The three-time NACAM champion came to Oregon Trail Rally as a warm-up event for his next championship round north of the border in Canada and did the unexpected, winning outright when the Subarus retired early on. A fair dose of luck was required to win. But that victory has changed Cordero’s perspective. His first order of business after spraying Champagne on the podium in downtown Dufur was how to come… Read More →

Ricardo Cordero has ended Brandon Semenuk’s 12-rally run of ARA National Championship wins with victory on the Oregon Trail Rally. The Citroën C3 Rally2 driver took control of the event after both factory Subarus hit the same rock and retired from day two on Saturday’s opener. Cordero was initially challenged by DirtFish instructor and Ferrari-Subaru star Sam Albert before a puncture robbed the Wild West winner of his shot at a maiden National victory. After… Read More →
