Driving this armoured station wagon feels like just that: something high off the ground and not particularly athletic in the corners, but incredibly smooth over beaten roads and potholes. The amount of travel in the suspension system is impressive as it simply takes the hits. I drove this thing during a generous portion of snowfall and the thing never flinched. Subaru is sometimes seen as the black sheep of the automotive industry. It’s an underdog,… Read More →

Travis Pastrana is back. He’s back with a smile, a knee that’s working and a desire as strong as ever to land a seventh American title. After a year away from the ARA, Pastrana will carry the fight to team-mate and chief title rival Brandon Semenuk this season. And he’ll do it in a brand-new Subaru Motorsports USA WRX. A car he tested for the first time on Wednesday. The first time? Yes. Doctor’s orders.… Read More →

As they sit, the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 twins have distinct-ish personalities, with the Subie’s handling generally not as tail-happy as the GR’s, though both are sublime sports cars. In a way, getting an even better-handling, more planted BRZ makes sense given each car’s reputation, even if what we really want is a bit more underhood grunt. But we digress. Read More →

Subaru’s quarterly profit surged 79 percent, as the automaker channeled robust U.S. sales to the bottom line for investment in electrification and other new technologies. The upswing puts the all-wheel-drive niche player on trajectory for its best fiscal-year earnings in almost a decade as it zeroes in on a double-digit operating profit margin of 10.5 percent. Subaru is investing heavily in a shift to electric vehicles and hybrids. Those plans are expected to eventually include… Read More →

From a distance, the 2024 Subaru Impreza may be mistaken for a crossover — perhaps its fraternal twin, the Crosstrek — but up close, this compact is all hatchback. Unfortunately, we mean that all too literally; as of 2024, the Impreza sedan is no more. With it, we also saw the demise of the manual transmission. But the Impreza hatchback is not merely a kneecapped Crosstrek. It’s lower and missing the crossover’s body cladding, yes,… Read More →

My week with the new 2024 Subaru Impreza made me think of the significant shift that has taken place in the compact and midsized car segments. The prevalence of all-wheel drive (AWD) systems, once a rarity in both categories, has now become a nearly standard expectation. I for one have always been a champion of AWD and we all need to thank Subaru for its adoption by all automakers. Read More →

Subaru engineers are like kids with Lego bricks, repeatedly reassembling the same few blocks into new things. Most automakers build a greater variety of chassis, engines, and suspension systems. Subaru engineers mostly remix. But the brand has a loyal following and a market position most of its rivals envy. Fully a third of its small lineup makes the list of the 25 best-selling cars in America. Unwilling to mess with success, Subaru introduces new bricks… Read More →

This may just be the rarest you’ll see this week. It’s a Subaru FF-1 – sometimes called the Star in the US market. Subaru sold thousands of them in the early 1970s, in Europe and the US, as part of its expansion into new markets. Then they all just disappeared into neglected, rusty piles. This little coupe has been saved, however, and its story is the genesis of Subaru as we know it. Jamie and… Read More →

Subaru laid out its plan to grow its U.S. sales to 680,000 vehicles in 2024 to dealers at the brand’s make meeting at the NADA Show. The key will be greatly reducing production interruptions to allow dealers to sell new vehicles from their inventories again. Last year, Subaru reported U.S. sales of 632,086 vehicles, up 14 percent from 2022. If the company achieves its targets, 2024 would be the brand’s best sales year in the… Read More →
