Subaru Ascent Towing Capacity: A Closer Look

Before Subaru’s new 3-row Ascent SUV arrived in 2019, making its debut at the 2017 LA Auto Show, any real towing duties were handled by the 2-row Outback with its underwhelming 3,000 lbs. pulling power at the time (it’s now 3,500 lbs.). Not really the right hauler to pull big toys like larger boats and campers – especially from a car brand known for adventure.
The 2023 Ascent gains a refresh, and Subaru says its mid-size SUV can still tow as much as 5,004 lb (2,270 kg) in its upper-level trims, only if the trailer has its own brakes. That puts it in direct competition with most of the other models in the three-row mid-size SUV class.
